How to Use Windows XP Parental Controls

Use of the Internet has become a necessity. Most people would not know how to cope without it. It's kind of like cell phones. Fifteen years ago, some people had them but most people did not. Today we turn around and drive miles to go back home and get them when we accidently leave the house without them. Although the Internet has given us unbelievable communication and information gathering abilities, it has also caused some serious problems. Having access to unlimited resources and information may be fine for you and I, our children are a different story. Just as you wouldn't let your kids be exposed to a horrendously violent movie, or sexually explicit movie, you don't want them to have access to these things online either. If you are currently using Windows XP operating system, you have some parental controls already on your computer. Actually, Windows XP parental controls are fairly good for restricting access to certain websites.

Here are some steps that you can follow to set up Windows XP parental controls on your computer. First, press the Start button. Next click on the Control Panel icon. It will open to a window that has a number of different icons on the page. Find the Internet Options icon and open it. A box will come up that is called Internet properties. Right below Internet properties find the content button and click it. When this box opens click on the button that says Enable. This will bring up a list of different topics from violence, to nudity, etc... Highlight the first topic. Now slide the bar at the bottom of the little window all the way to the right. This will restrict access completely to websites that contain the type of material highlighted. Then click OK. Go to the next topic and to the same thing. After you are finished click OK. When have set all the topics level of restriction, you will be asked to set a password. After this is done, your Windows XP parental controls are set.

Be sure to remember your password or put it in a safe place. You can feel pretty certain that your children will not be able to gain access to the restricted websites. Although, Windows XP parental controls are good, you cannot control your home computer's controls from a remote location. You cannot monitor your child's Internet activity from your office. If a stranger was instant messaging your child, you could not do anything to stop it. You would be able to see the websites that were visited when you got home, but your control of activity during the day while you are away is null. If you kids were able to break through the blocks somehow, you are out of lock.

There are computer programs that can be used to supplement your Windows XP parental controls though.
Sentry Parental Control Software is an excellent software package that will allow you to use varying degrees of restriction on Internet use depending on the child's age. Your older children can have more relaxed controls while the younger ones can have more restrictive ones. Most of the packages available for purchase will allow you to have a much more active role in the monitoring process.
