The Limits of Windows XP Parental Controls

Monitoring your children's access to the Internet is likely to be on of the toughest tasks you have as they get older. Most kids are on the Internet by the time they can talk. Obviously, when they are still young it will be a little bit easier to control what they see and do online. If they are at all computer savvy though, don't wait too long to clamp some controls on their access. If you have Windows XP, you may be able to use the Windows XP parental controls program for a while when you kids are younger.

It provides a way to block access to certain types of websites, which should work pretty well until your kid is 2 or 3. Now, when you and I were 2 or 3 years old, we were probably still in la-la land. Today though, kids seem to be a lot more advanced. Don't know if it's something in the water or just what, but... the Windows XP Parental Controls will allow the websites to be restricted so a young child should be prevented from even accidentally going to an inappropriate site. If you work and you have a sitter watching your kids, Windows XP parental controls will allow you e to see what websites they went to during the day, after you get home.

As your kids start to get a little bit older though, and maybe become a little more computer literate, they may find ways to get around the Windows XP parental controls and you will have no way to do anything about it until you discover the break. At this point you need to call in some stronger reinforcement. You should install a more stringent parental control system. There are quite a few on the market. One system that does a good job for all different levels of restrictions is Sentry Parental Control Software. With this package, you will be able to control things on a real-time basis, not just when you get home at night.

This package as well as others in the market, allow you to monitor incoming and outgoing email messages, instant messages, chat rooms visited and websites visited. These systems let you see what' s happening in real-time. You can log onto your child's computer from a remote location, like your office and control it completely. You can read the email messages and instant messages. You can set the system to alert you instantly when someone is talking to your child online with inappropriate language. You can be alerted if your kid tries to go to a prohibited website. In a way, you are Big Brother when it comes your kids Internet activities. It may be a bit invasive, but it is a way to keep them safe.

In conclusion, you can probably rely on Windows XP parental controls for a few years of your children's lives but sooner or later you will have to upgrade to a more powerful and versatile system. It is the only way to protect them from the increasing dangers online.
